The Meghalaya state and eco-region of northeastern India contains a rich tapestry of biodiversity thanks to an incredible amount of rainfall — it’s been described as the wettest place on Earth. The rain has given rise to beautiful sacred forests, wildlife and incredible communities nestled in the Khasi Hills.
The rolling hills are famous for the rugged, breathtaking landscape, as well as a rich culture that developed over the centuries. The eastern hills district is home to Sohra, where travelers will find a beautiful plateau on the southern slopes dotted with waterfalls flowing over deep gorges, pouring into rivers that flow straight into the plains. The nearby Laitkynsew resort offers picturesque hills, baths and caving for more adventurous explorers, while Mawsynram contains some of the largest waterfalls in India set amongst rolling mountains. It’s also home to the Mawjumbiun Cave where you find the largest stalagmites in the country.
Other popular destinations in the Khasi Hills include Umiam Lake and the famed Mairang subdivision where you’ll find the Kyllang rock. This massive, imposing dome rises 5,400 feet above sea level and is 1,000 feet across. The rock is several million years old and can be climbed for excellent views from the top. While in town you’ll also want to check out Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya, the largest hill-station in India.
