The last thing you want when you return from a backcountry hiking trip is a case of giardiasis, the stomach bug that will have you in dire straits for days. One great solution is the Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System, a lightweight option that will keep you safe from harm.

The system involves a tiny cylinder that has a few versatile uses, all of which allow the user to drink straight from the device. It can be connected to a straw and dropped into a water bottle (or into a water source), connected to the top of a water bottle or connected in line to a water bladder/reservoir system.

The Mini weighs only two ounces, so it’s compact and light, leaving room for other essentials. The system’s life is 100,000 gallons of water. Then, simply backwash the filter and use it again in perpetuity.

Sawyer sells the system as part of a kit that includes the filter, a 16-ounce collapsible water pouch for storage, a cleaning plunger and a drinking straw. And it removes 99.99999% of all bacteria, such as salmonella, cholera and E.coli; removes 99.9999% of all protozoa, such as giardia and cryptosporidium. It sells for just $20, making it a no-brainer purchase.
