Beaufort, North Carolina, is home to one of the oldest cemeteries in the state. The Old Burying Grounds offers a glimpse into the city’s 300-year-old history. One of the more famous gravesites belongs to a young girl buried in a rum barrel after not surviving the voyage from England. Visitors leave toys and flowers at her resting place to this day. Guided tours are available year-round, weather permitting. Learn more about the cemetery and other haunted locations in the region on a Beaufort Ghost Walk tour. Led by Port City Tours, a guide dressed in pirate garb brings guests to haunted landmarks while sharing chilling tales of ghost ships and maritime hauntings.

Off the coast of Beaufort lies the wreck of Queen Anne’s Revenge, the flagship of infamous pirate Blackbeard. The ship ran aground in 1718 near Beaufort Inlet. Today, a state-led archaeological project is underway to recover items from the ship and preserve its complex history. Experienced divers may visit Crystal Coast’s Graveyard of the Atlantic, where many shipwrecks are still visible in their final resting spots.
