It appears Facebook is following in Google and Airbnb’s footsteps when it comes to travel guides and booking assistance. The social media website quietly launched a City Guides features in the Facebook app that allows users to book some hotels and restaurants and message or call other hotels, restaurants, tours and attractions.

While many hotels are now simply easier to contact, there are several, such as Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas and the Eliot hotel in Boston, that allow users to book reservations directly through the app. There are also Book Now buttons for some restaurants including ROKA Charlotte Street in London.

“We’re testing a redesigned surface on city Pages that showcases information about your city,” a Facebook spokesperson told Tech Crunch. “This content already exists on Facebook, and during this test we’ll be centralizing it in a way that is more personalized and relevant to you. So, this new feature can help people get a better sense of their city, or a city they’re visiting through their friends’ eyes.”

The new travel-focused app features challenges the likes of Foursquare, and the guides will show a list of cities, which of your friends have visited the cities and recommendations for things to do and see. When you click a city, you’ll see profile icons of friends who visited, and when you tap each one, it will display of list of places they’ve been. This data is reportedly being extracted from users’ check-ins and Facebook posts, so it seems it will work better if you have well-traveled friends.
