Like most southern cities, Wilmington, N.C., is a town that is slow moving and easygoing. Perhaps that is the reason a high-energy Mexican dive like Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn stands out among the rest. Located just 15 minutes from Wrightsville Beach, Flaming Amy’s is a frequent stop for both picky locals and beach-goer out-of-towners alike.
Upon entering the restaurant, guests are greeted with walls lush with color. The yellow, red and pink surfaces are masked with hundreds of pieces of unique street art, as well as mosaics, photographs, vintage signs and bumper stickers. The line to the counter is often out the door, but the self-described “burrito monkeys” are fast behind the counter when taking orders.
The centerpiece of the menu is, of course, the long list of specialty burritos, each for only $7.99. Some popular burritos include the Baywatch — filled with shrimp, grilled tilapia and their homemade “Hasslehoff” jalapeño sauce — as well as the Thai Mee Up — complete with shredded carrots, red peppers and Thai peanut sauce, and a choice of meat.
In addition to burritos, Amy’s offers an extensive selection of tacos, quesadillas and nachos, and an assortment of draft beers. However, the true crown jewel of Amy’s is their salsa bar, featuring nine different homemade salsas like the ginger peach and the pineapple jalapeño.
Flaming Amy’s may be loud and crude, but their enormous portions, fast service and tasty food will make it a worthwhile experience.

Insta FeedAre You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?
Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).
