June is National Pride Month, and Hawaiian Airlines and Hawai’i-born dance celebrity Mark Kanemura celebrate with a #RainbowRunwayChallenge, honoring inclusivity and aloha. The challenge debuted with the launch of the airline’s new TikTok to encourage travelers to create their own #RainbowRunwayChallenge dance or walk to win 160,000 HawaiianMiles, a five-night stay at Royal Hawaiian Resort and the chance to join Kanemura on Hawaiian’s Rainbow Runway float at Honolulu Pride Parade and Festival on Oct. 15.
Watch the video inspiring the challenge. It takes viewers through Kanemura’s hometown, highlighting O’ahu locations that represent a different color of the rainbow:
- Royal Hawaiian Resort, a.k.a. Pink Palace (red)
- Waikīkī’s Surfboard Alley (orange)
- Waimānalo Country Farms’ sunflowers (yellow)
- Kāko’o ‘Ōiwi’s taro patches (green)
- Waikīkī pier (blue)
The video ends in a dance celebration on a runway at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport with Hawaiian Airlines’ iconic aircraft tail (purple) in the background. Others join Kanemura along the way, including LGBTQ+ influencers, kid pop dancers, hula dancers, drag queens and members of the airline’s LGBTQ+ resource group, Ha’aheo, meaning pride.
“Dance is a universal language that can break barriers, and the #RainbowRunwayChallenge represents an opportunity for people to express themselves in a fun and prideful way. I have always believed that dance is for everyone, and I am so excited to connect with people through this challenge,” said Kanemura. “This video is all about self-expression and pride, and during the filming I was reminded how proud I am to be from this special place and to be a part of this beautiful community. I cannot wait to return in October for an even bigger celebration!”
The 2022 Honolulu Pride Parade and Festival kicks off Oct. 1, with events throughout the month with the theme Rooted in Pride, honoring cultural and ancestral queer roots in the Hawai’ian Islands.
