Are you an animal lover, looking for an excuse to escape the cold weather this winter? Travel for a good cause, with a trip to the Surin province of Thailand and help save an Asian elephant habitat with Global Aware.
This program gives volunteers the unique experience of helping preserve the elephant’s natural habitat, promote eco-tourism and help suggest alternative uses for elephants in tourism revenue. The work available for volunteers depends on availability, fitness and size of your group. According to their website, plans tend to be set about a week before departure and can change.
One thing you can plan on during this trip is you will definitely not be riding on the back of any elephants. While riding elephants is popular in Thailand, it is harmful to the animals and only encourages their abuse and part in the tourist trade.
This experience does, however, offers immersive events normal tourists would not be able to experience, including a welcoming ceremony with a Shaman, local cooking lessons, close access to elephants and/or close proximity to these majestic creatures.
