Away notifications are not just for your work email — let everyone on your social media channels know you won’t be contacting them for a week or two. Additionally, tell close family members and friends the name of your hotel and leave them its number, for strictly the event of an emergency.

In the event you do need immediate help when you are away from civilization — whether you find yourself deep in the woods or on a private island — you should always have a contingency plan regarding communication.
