Tips / Travel

If you are embarking on a multi-day trek, there are many different factors to consider.

From appropriate gear to proper food supplies, preparation is key. One factor often overlooked is group dynamic, and the longer your planned hike the more important this becomes.

Let’s assume you are hiking with people you know well and the group dynamic is generally healthy. Even in the most well-established hiking groups, unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather or a fall can lead to stress and anxiety which lowers morale.

On thru-hikes which can take weeks or even months, one of the best morale boosters is in fact to take a time out. If you spot a hot spring or cavern slightly off route, make the effort to get down there and relax for a day.

Not only will this help to rest aching limbs, it also affords welcome head space away from the monotony of hiking. Even the most hardened trekkers can get trail blues, and a change of mental state can work wonders.

Another good idea is to pack a treat to break the monotony of camp rations. If you are on longer hikes it’s likely you will be eating dehydrated meals, and a little bit of delicious home comfort food can pick up everyone’s mood.

Pack a deck of cards or some other small games for evenings in camp. While some people prefer to read of listen to music, a communal activity can work wonders for group morale if used at the right time.

As with any situation, there will inevitably be moments of tension on long hikes. Communication is vital, and with these extra considerations you will be good to go.
