My friend and I grabbed brunch at La Calaca Feliz in Philadelphia’s Fairmount neighborhood recently. The Mexican eatery offers brunch service on Saturday and Sunday. Located in the heart of Fairmount, La Calaca Feliz is in close proximity to Eastern State Penitentiary, bars and restaurants and less than a mile from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
I made reservations for 11 a.m., right when the restaurant opened. We were the first patrons to arrive, so reservations weren’t necessary. Once seated, we browsed the menu while our waitress brought over water. I love a good brunch cocktail, so I ordered a Michelada, a beer cocktail. Their version was made with Dos Equis Amber, lime juice, tomato and spices.
The menu mixes brunch classics with more traditional Mexican fare. My friend has some food allergies and our waitress was helpful in going over which dishes were safe for her. While I was tempted by items like the carne con huevos and huevos rancheros, I was interested in a dish more lunch than breakfast. I opted for the chicken tacos. The chicken tinga is shredded in a rich sauce made from tomatoes, chipotle chiles and onions. Served on three corn tortillas, the chicken was topped with avocado, queso fresco and pickled red cabbage with a wedge of lime on the side. I devoured my entire meal.
La Calaca Feliz is a great neighborhood spot, serving up tasty Mexican dishes. It’s great for a casual meet up with friends or a post-museum meal.

Dining is an art, and now that applies to both on the ground and at 35,000 feet thanks to Hainan Airlines’ “Hai Chef” Inflight Artistic Chinese cuisine series, a collaboration with Dong Zhenxiang, a Chinese culinary master also known as Dadong.
For most of us, time in the car is “me time.” You can listen to that podcast you’re captivated by, blast that pop song and sing along at the top of your lungs or listen to the next chapter in that biography e-book you’re almost finished. A road trip only amplifies those opportunities. So, next time you’re traveling by road, take the wheel and take control. Opt for a rental car on your next vacation, rather than a rideshare, taxi or public transportation, and enjoy the open road on your own terms.
