Walking into La Flor de Chile is like stepping back in time. Visitors are treated to a colorful showcase of Chilean history, with walls adorned with old postcards and photos, paintings and other memorabilia. It feels almost like being at home.
The restaurant began as a storefront in 1930 selling pencils and notebooks to families. Over the years it was passed down from generation to generation and morphed into the fabulous eatery it is today. The lengthy menu features authentic Chilean fare mixed with a few of the chef’s favorite dishes. The empanadas were particularly delicious and filling, while the wine list was impressively extensive.
The staff offers an English-language menu for those who don’t speak Spanish, and some of them were bilingual. They were friendly, diligent and happy to make suggestions even when the place was packed. The dining area in the restaurant is somewhat small and seating is tight, so expect be shoulder-to-shoulder with your neighbors.
However, the friendly atmosphere was perfect after a day spent wandering solo around the city. Though La Flor de Chile probably won’t top the list of anyone’s favorite restaurant among the competitive foodie scene in Viña del Mar, it certainly offers great food that provides visitors with an authentic feel and taste of the city.
For most of us, time in the car is “me time.” You can listen to that podcast you’re captivated by, blast that pop song and sing along at the top of your lungs or listen to the next chapter in that biography e-book you’re almost finished. A road trip only amplifies those opportunities. So, next time you’re traveling by road, take the wheel and take control. Opt for a rental car on your next vacation, rather than a rideshare, taxi or public transportation, and enjoy the open road on your own terms.
