Denmark topped the list in years past, but now comes in a close second. Denmark offers an enviable work-life balance and plenty of nature. It also boasts a 100 percent literacy rate and shares similar values with its Nordic neighbors. © Sean Pavone | Dreamstime.com

Destinations / Europe

Continental Europe is one of the most open-minded places on earth. This may be a result of the many marches and protests that happened across the continent for numerous years. Below is a list of some of the most LGBTQ+-friendly location across Europe.

Sitges and Barcelona, Spain
Sitges hosts the most-talked-about pride parade, and some of the best gay events in Spain and there is a guide for all those who wish to visit. Of the 22 beaches in Sitges, three are gay.

Barcelona has a gay district called Gaixample. It is one of the liveliest places in Barcelona and the nightlife around that area is always energetic and animated, with the best gay bars and clubs in Barcelona.

London
Soho in London was the first gay district in Europe, and travelers have claimed it is by far the liveliest part of the city. London has many gay-friendly areas across the city and its pride parades host more than 300 LGBTQ+ groups annually.

Copenhagen, Denmark
Denmark was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex unions, making the country a big part of LGBTQ+ history. There are a lot of gay bars and clubs in the country, and they host many events throughout the year for members of the LGBTQ+ community. This is a great location to get a tour of Copenhagen while learning about the history.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Netherlands has a long history with the LGBTQ+ community. Same-sex activities were legalized in the 1800s. Bans were put in place in the 1970s to ensure homosexuals were not discriminated against, and this year a ban was placed on discrimination against sexual identity and expression. This country has a rich LGBTQ+ history and is worth an exploration when visiting.
