The word “craft” is synonymous these days with small American breweries, and beer drinkers know the concept well.
But until recently, that trend was unknown in the spirits industry, which has long been dominated by major labels like Bacardi and Jim Beam. Now, though, small producers are popping up nationwide, and they’re adding a craft element to the age-old practice of distilling liquor.
The trend is taking hold, and Fortune magazine predicted it to be the next local liquor boom, citing the fact that 10 years ago there were only 50 craft distilleries in the United States compared to nearly 800 today.
Still, the craft distilling industry might have a harder time getting established and growing than craft beer did, due to higher excise taxes paid by craft distilleries compared to breweries, and the fact that liquor is a more expensive purchase than a six-pack. Consumers are more likely to reach for a familiar label if they’re plunking down $30 or more than if they’re spending only $10.
The American Distilling Institute tracks openings via this handy map that can help you seek out new distilleries to visit or patronize on your travels.
