My husband and I had brunch with friends at the recently opened Louie Louie. Located in Philadelphia’s University City neighborhood, the restaurant is a great spot for anyone visiting Drexel University or the University of Pennsylvania.
We arrived just in time for our reservation and were immediately seated. The European-inspired bistro is decked out in colorful, lavish furnishings with a black-and-white, checkered tile floor. We hadn’t seen our friends in a while, so we quickly ordered drinks then caught up before perusing the menu. I ordered a blood orange bellini, which was refreshing and just a bit tart.
My husband and I couldn’t decide on what to eat, so we decided to split a few items. From the starters portion of the menu, we ordered pan con tomate (bread with tomato) and tuna tartar. The bread was perfectly garlicky with fresh tomatoes and the tuna was light. For our main, we wanted more of a lunch option than breakfast, so we opted for the grilled chicken sandwich. It came with tomato, mozzarella, pesto and arugula. We had a salad on the side. Everything we ordered was flavorful and perfect for brunch.
As the restaurant was only a couple weeks old on our visit, there were a few kinks. Our waiter seemed unfamiliar with the menu, bringing our friend the wrong wine and needing us to repeat our order several times. He was nice and apologized. We took it as still learning the ropes.
If you find yourself in the University City neighborhood, stop in at Louie Louie for drinks or a meal.
