Memorial Day is when our nation remembers those who died in the service of their country and has been celebrated in the United States since the late 1800s. This national holiday gives civilians the chance to show their appreciation for fallen soldiers throughout the generations.
Spending the weekend in Washington, D.C., will open up a world of opportunity for ways to celebrate Memorial Day. The National Memorial Day Parade is the largest memorial parade lining up crowds in D.C. since 2005. Typically, 250,000 people in attendance watch marching bands, current military personnel, veterans and student groups march through Constitution Avenue, this year on May 25.
A trip to the National Mall is a staple for Memorial Day weekend. With so many iconic and historic locations to visit from the Lincoln Memorial and the reflecting pool, to the WWII Memorial, Washington Monument and Korean War Memorial.
Also in D.C., there is a free, patriotic concert the night before Memorial Day on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. With speeches, tributes, and entertainment scattered all over the Nation’s capitol on Memorial Day weekend, it will be easy to keep busy.
Whether it is the wreath laying ceremony at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at the Arlington National Cemetery, or visiting a local veteran’s park, there is so much to do when it comes to honoring fallen soldiers on Memorial Day.
