Destinations / North America

Regional maple syrup producers have begun their annual sap collection and maple syrup production in the Adirondack region of upstate New York. New York is the second-largest producer of maple syrup in the country, and third in the world, producing more than 820,000 gallons yearly.

Hundreds of types of syrups, foods, beverages, candies, cocktails and experiences centered around maple syrup exist in the region to delight travelers. Find shops and farmers markets selling maple-flavored cotton candy, hard candies, butter, donuts, sauces and jellies. At Big Slide Brewery, maple bourbon imperial stout is on offer, and maple-glazed items can be found on many restaurant menus. At Mirror Lake Inn, the Adirondack Maple Sugar Body Scrub exfoliates the skin.

Use the Maple Wayfinder Trail to find local producers and points of interest, or the Adirondack Harvest website to find producers, distributors and maple-themed events in the region.

If you can’t make it to the Adirondacks region this maple season, bring a touch of maple home with this recipe for a maple margarita from The Deer’s Head Inn in Elizabethtown, New York:

Maple Margarita

1.5 ounce tequila

½ ounce mandarin liqueur

½ ounce fresh lime juice

½ ounce fresh lemon juice

½ ounce maple lemonade (traditional lemonade with maple as extra sweetener)

Tablespoon local maple syrup

Lime garnish

Rub a freshly cut lime wedge around the rim of the glass and coat the rim by placing it upside down in a dish of tajin spice blend. Fill the glass with ice. Mix the ingredients together in a shaker with ice cubes and strain into the glass. Drizzle the top with a tablespoon of pure Adirondack maple syrup. Garnish with lime.

Are You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?

Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).
