Reviews / Restaurant

On a visit to Nashville, my husband and I knew we wanted to try Tennessee-style barbecue. With plenty of places to choose from, we decided on Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint.

When we arrived at the downtown location, there was a line out the door. Since we were a party of two, the host came over and asked if we’d like to sit at the bar instead of waiting for a table. We agreed and were seated immediately.

Our friendly waitress and bartender came over immediately to take our drink order and offered some suggestions. We each ordered a local beer from Yazoo Brewing Company, enjoyed while looking over the menu. We decided on ribs, with French fries and coleslaw as our sides. Our waitress also talked us into splitting the brisket burger. We were glad she did. The ground beef patty was topped with cheese, onions, barbecue sauce and brisket. I thought it would be overwhelming, but the flavors paired nicely and half of the sandwich was plenty.

Martin’s was the inspiration for the barbecue restaurant on Netflix’s Master of None Nashville episode. We made sure to order the Alabama White barbecue sauce, prominently featured in the episode. It was just as good as it looked on TV.

Despite being full, we were pleased with our meal from Martin’s. Between the skilled staff, relaxed atmosphere and tasty barbecue, Martin’s is a must-stop. Besides the restaurant’s four locations in Tennessee, there are also outposts in Kentucky and West Virginia, making it even easier to experience the tasty barbecue.
