Travelers are constantly seeking new ways to get more out of vacations than just an impressive Instagram feed and a few cliché selfies. A growing trend in travel involves combining a visit to a new place with the ability to partake in activities that make a difference in the world, not just in our personal lives.
Among the trends surrounding conservation, living green and traveling, National Geographic and the National Parks Conservation Association joined forces to build upon a new concept in the world of travel known as geotourism.
The first installments of this initiative focus on the city of Portland, Ore., and its surroundings, and smaller riverside communities throughout the state of New York. A grant from the William Penn Foundation helped fuel the majority of the project.
National Geographic revamped its website to attract travelers with a bit of extra cash who are looking for ways to give back via travel. The new interactive website aims to inspire travelers to get involved in local communities and learn more about the planet on which they live.
The program officials invite locals to submit stories and suggestions to the website so participants can read about their intended destinations and receive an insider´s perspective.
