The story behind Nong’s Khao Man Gai food trucks and restaurant in Portland, Ore., is something of a legend. Nong Poonsukwattan a arrived in Oregon from Bangkok in 2003 with two suitcases and $70. Now, she owns an empire —and it’s all based around a humble street food dish called khao man gai.

At Nong’s, whether you hit the food trucks or the new brick and mortar restaurant, you won’t be disappointed. The simple, humble dish is just what a rainy day in Portland needs. There’s aromatic rice topped with slices of sustainable, humanely raised chicken and some pretty incredible sauce. It’s so beloved on its own Nong launched a line of bottled sauces. There’s also a small bowl of soup made from the chicken poaching liquid — for further warming you up from the inside out.

Nong’s is always busy, regardless of which location you visit or at what time. That’s thanks in part to lots of press accolades and Nong’s Food Network appearances, but it also speaks to the deliciousness of the food. And the service is always impeccable despite the long lines and endless scramble.
