Northern British Columbia is home to stunning scenery, with glacier-capped mountains feeding mighty rivers that house massive salmon and thousands of years of human history and culture. But for most travelers, this region is fairly inaccessible — you’d have to know a local, or know your way around, to get to a lot of the hidden gems in the area.
Luckily, the University of Northern British Columbia’s Continuing Studies program is filling that niche with tours offered via jet boat — for college credit. The program offers numerous courses revolving around specific themes: Photography, Skeena River Historic Journey, Ghost Towns of Northwest B.C., Canneries of the North Coast and more.
Each trip encompasses a small group of people, and you’ll spend most of your time jetting along waterways to destinations like abandoned mining towns, former salmon canneries, decommissioned cemeteries and more. The scenery is as enticing as the history, with waterfalls, hot springs, islands, mountains and plenty of wildlife like herons, bald eagles and even grizzly bears.
The experts leading the trip are incredibly knowledgeable, and the trips are just as packed with adventure as they are with education. The all-inclusive trips include your accommodations, transportation and meals while aboard the boat and at night in on-shore accommodations.
