Old Place

Tucked away in LA’s Malibu Canyon is Old Place, a rustic eatery that looks more like a scene from an old movie set than one of the best restaurants in the Los Angeles area. As its name implies, it looks extremely old and run down but don’t let appearances fool you.

If you don’t have a reservation (which really helps since seating is extremely limited) simply write your name on the clipboard hanging by the door and head to the wine tasting room next door — the staff will come find you when your table is ready.

The food at Old Place is amazingly simple and simply amazing. The brunch menu includes breakfast staples like biscuits and gravy along with twists on standards like the Blue Corn Meal Flapjacks. Wash your meal down with a manly take on a girlie drink — the Manmosa, a mimosa served in a pint glass. Be sure to order a side of bacon because it will be the thing you compare all bacon to for the rest of your life. The Old Place Potato Salad with blue cheese and cranberries mixed in may sound like an odd combination but the unique flavor makes it a must-try dish.

The dinner menu is equally wonderful. One of the best menu items, hands down, is the Old Place Steamed Clams served in a delicious white wine sauce. The dessert menu offers classics like homemade fruit cobbler and apple crisp, of course served with a healthy serving of hand-whipped cream.

If you’re lucky enough to receive a gift certificate from Old Place you’ll quickly realize why they seldom get redeemed. They are works of art: wooden statues decorated with horns, antlers and farming tools that have the amount etched into them. These gifts often become prized possessions kept as keepsakes instead of cashed in for a meal.
