Tips / Travel

Packing a carry-on suitcase can be difficult enough without factoring in bulky winter clothes. If you’re planning a cold weather trip and don’t want to check your luggage, follow our tips for an efficient packing experience.

  • Wear your heaviest shoes or boots on the airplane. This will clear up prime space in your luggage.
  • The same concept goes for clothing. If you plan to bring any bulky sweaters or pants, wear them on the plane. Be sure to wear something lighter underneath in case you’re hot and want to remove a layer once on board.
  • Don’t be afraid to layer. Instead of bringing multiple heavy sweaters, limit yourself to one or two and wear other layers underneath.
  • Thermal shirts and pants are thinner and provide more warmth than some sweaters. Pack extra thermal clothes to layer.
  • Pay attention to the material. Opt for clothing made of wool, fleece and nylon. While cotton is lightweight and breathable, the material isn’t water resistant. If it gets wet, it stays wet and heavy.
  • Pack an oversize scarf. You can wear this for a poncho-like effect on the plane and use it as a big, comfy scarf once outdoors.
  • Don’t overdo it with winter accessories. Unless you’re planning a trip with many outdoor activities, plan to pack only one or two pairs of hats and gloves.
  • Leave room for socks. Make sure you don’t skimp on socks. Pack pairs from L.L. Bean, Cabela’s and REI to ensure you stay warm.

Massive Resort Planned for Florida’s Forgotten Coast

Known as Florida’s Forgotten Coast, this stretch of the Florida Panhandle is often overlooked for more well-known destinations in the state, such as Panama City Beach, Miami and Tampa. But the region’s quiet and laid-back atmosphere slowly draws travelers wishing to escape the crowds and high prices of Florida’s other cities, and one hospitality brand just announced plans to bring a 55-acre resort and community to the area.
