Food & Drink

Philadelphia’s newest pickler, Brine Street Picklery, is a recently launched local vendor attracting pickle lovers with its brine ambition.

Using seasonally fresh ingredients typically sourced from local purveyors, Brine Street creates the most snackable pickled products in the Philly area, including hot-pepper hoagie relish featuring cherry peppers and green peppers; spicy, pickled cucumber spears with Thai chili; and zing beans featuring green beans pickled with ingredients like Thai chili, mustard seed and dill.

Head pickler P.J. Hopkins launched his pickling hobby following a trip to New Orleans a few years ago; after enjoying a delicious pickled green bean in a Bloody Mary, he was inspired to begin experimenting with pickle recipes when he came home to the Philly area.

Last fall, P.J. and five of his friends came together and turned his hobby into a business. In addition to whipping up jars of P.J.’s bean recipes, the group of friends started experimenting with their hot-pepper relish and pickled cucumber spears. Now they’re working with the people over at Greensgrow Farms to make all their pickled goods in their commercial kitchen space shared by other local food companies.

The team recently introduced a pickle of the month program, offering a limited supply of pickled delicious made using in-season veggies. Beets were the introductory pickle of the month, pickled with onions, apple cider vinegar, rosemary, ground cloves, brown sugar, allspice, cinnamon, salt, sugar and water, followed by carrots in the springtime.

As they try to feature the freshest and most readily available produce, Brine Street doesn’t usually know its other pickles of the month in advance, but pickle lovers can stay up-to-date on the latest offering via Brine Street’s social media channels and its new website.

Ahead of a busy summer schedule with appearances at local outdoor markets and events in the area, Brine Street just recently launched its website, featuring the latest product offerings and event information as well as the option to sign up for its monthly Brine Street Beat newsletter.

Find out how much of a big dill Brine Street is online and browse its Facebook and Instagram to find out where the team will be next and enjoy its fun designs and photography. According to the folks at Brine Street, the company is taking illustrations from talented friends and invites anyone reading to submit a pickle-related illustration for fun so the company can possibly post it to its social media channels and give illustrators a shout out.

Those interested in trying this Philly picklery’s briny deliciousness can place orders via email at orders@brinestreetpicklery.com.
