While you might not think of Hungary as the first choice for an outdoor adventure trip, this country may surprise you with all its options. Here are a few nature-heavy activities to consider adding to your Hungary itinerary:
A Visit to Hortobágyi National Park
This UNESCO World Heritage site blends the outdoors with culture, folklore and history. As the largest semi-natural grassland in Europe, the park is filled with nearly 350 species of birds, as well as livestock. The park is also a partial dark sky preserve.

Climb a Via Ferrata Route
A “via ferrata” is a trail in the mountains using steel cables and railings to allow climbers to traverse otherwise dangerous and tricky paths. Not for the faint of heart, climbing one of these routes offers spectacular scenery. Hungary boasts multiple such routes with varying degrees of difficulty.
Paddleboard the Danube
If the bulk of your Hungary adventure will be spent in the city, you can still enjoy some nature and a little adventure when you take to a paddleboard on the Danube River in Budapest.
