Lapland is said to be the home of Santa Claus, and trips are common among young families who want to take their kids to the home of the benevolent bearded man that comes bearing gifts.
However, Lapland is not just for parents and children, and there are a number of good reasons to visit the area. Most visitors arrive by plane to the Finnish capital of Helsinki before heading north to Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland.
One of the main attractions is the Northern Lights. The amazing natural phenomenon is visible in Lapland on more than 200 nights per year. See the Aurora Borealis on a snow dog tour, or check into one of the more comfortable accommodation options such as the Kakslauttanen Resort. Lay in bed in the comfort of a glass igloo watching the light show above.
There are a number of ski resorts in Lapland which offer everything from beginner slopes to black runs, while less active visitors can see the scenery on a husky dog or reindeer sled ride. For those more interested in cultural experiences, you can visit the Sami people, the only indigenous group in the European Union.
As you can see, there is plenty more to Lapland than Santa Claus, and it’s well worth planning a trip. Accommodations and flights are not cheap, but check for last-minute package deals. Leading operators include Activities Abroad, Inghams and Discover the World, all of which offered varied trips.
