Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression typically affecting individuals in the fall and winter months. Symptoms vary and include depression, weight gain, change in appetite, irritability, concentration loss and sleep problems. If you feel these symptoms coming on during the bleak, cold months this time of year, you may be developing the disorder. There are various products available to combat SAD.
Aromatherapy
Essential oils including peppermint and lavender can help keep you calm and relaxed. These oils offer mood-lifting benefits and can be used in a variety of ways. Many stores like Whole Foods, Wegmans and Target sell these oils.
Light therapy
One of the more common treatments for SAD, light therapy mimics natural outdoor light. It’s recommended to use the light box within the first hour of waking up in the morning for about 20–30 minutes. There are a variety of light therapy boxes on the market, so do your research to find the best one for your needs before you purchase.
Dawn simulator alarm
Much like the light boxes, a dawn simulator alarm mimics natural light. The alarm gently wakes you up with its gradual light. This one has simulated sunrise and sunset settings.
Make sure you supplement these products with a healthy diet, exercise, plenty of rest and time outdoors when possible. Consult your doctor about your symptoms first to determine if you need further treatment like antidepressants or counseling.
