Trends / Sports

The iconic road cycling race was held July 1–23, and wound its way across the stunning French scenery.

This year, the race began in the German city of Dusseldorf, crossing briefly into Belgium before coming back to France. The route took in some of the most famous Alpine and Pyrenean mountain climbs, visited the southern city of Marseille and then headed to Paris for the final stage, which finished on the Champs-Elysee.

Television coverage focused as much on the amazing landscapes of the country as it did the racing, and it often felt like an extended tourist brochure for France. While the footage may have inspired you to plan another trip to the country, there was a serious sporting event going on at the same time.

For the past few years, British rider Chris Froome was the dominant force, winning the title the past three years in a row. This year was no exception, with Froome winning once again, even though French fans hoped Romain Bardet would end their 31-year wait for a home winner.

The most popular stages for spectators tended to be the mountain climbs, where the riders pass by more slowly than on the flat stages. Competition for spaces was so intense fans in camper vans have been known to arrive days in advance to get a good spot.

The Tour de France provides another excuse to visit the country.
