Recreational Equipment Inc. may be better known for its outdoor equipment, but now the company released an app which promises to be a boon for those who love to visit U.S. National Parks.
This year, the company announced its app would provide trail maps and guides to a large selection of national parks. The app is part of the celebration of the National Park Service Centennial, and will help outdoor types enjoy areas they hadn’t previously visited.
REI signed up for a multimillion-dollar partnership with the National Park Service, which also includes guides, content and live experiences. Another facet is the app, which provides valuable information on iconic national parks such as Yellowstone, Zio and Grand Teton.
According to the company, the aim is to allow visitors to, “go deeper into the National Park System” using a number of tools. The app has maps, descriptions and a location signal which updates in real time to stop hikers from getting lost.
The app is free to download on iOS and Android devices, and the content is available offline as it is stored on the phone. Data is provided by Mountain Project, a popular climbing app which REI acquired in 2015.
If you are planning a trip to a National Park or just want to visit one on your screen, download the app now.
