Traveling is expensive enough with train and plane tickets, hotels, shopping and unexpected admission fees to tourist attractions. Avoid adding food costs to that list by following the advice below.
Cook
Reserve a room in a hostel or guest house that has a kitchen, or book a long-stay accommodation in someone’s shared flat or apartment. Ask the concierge or flat owner for the location of the nearest market and shop wisely. Use the opportunity to purchase local ingredients (which are typically cheaper) and attempt to cook a local dish.
Save the restaurants for lunches
It’s no secret restaurant lunch prices are cheaper than multicourse dinners. Some restaurants even offer lunch deals that include an appetizer, entrée and dessert, plus a drink. Normally advertised outside the restaurant, keep your eyes peeled on your first day in your destination and make a mental note of any specials that sound tasty. If your only option is to dine at dinnertime, order appetizers to share and go easy on the alcohol.
Eat local
As previously mentioned, local ingredients and dishes are often less expensive due to the short commuting distance from the source to your plate. Street food can be one of the best ways to experience the local cuisine while saving a few bucks.
