Seattle’s Urban Wineries

For decades, the wine scene in Washington has centered largely on the wineries east of the Cascade Mountains, where the majority of the state’s vineyards are concentrated. But recently, vintners have been seeking out real estate in the rapidly growing city of Seattle, where they can connect with an increasingly educated fan base.

Because real estate is at a premium, these winemakers tend to be small producers. When you visit one of these urban wineries, the experience is even more intimate than the already-friendly experience you’re likely to get east of the mountains.

Often the winemaker is on hand to talk you through a tasting and the production area is within view. Some of these wineries maintain larger operations in the eastern wine growing regions, while others operate solely out of their in-city location. Almost all have regular open hours for tastings and bottle purchases.

Among the best urban wineries in Seattle are Almquist Family Vintners, Elsom Cellars, Falling Rain Cellars, Stomani Cellars and Scarborough Winery. Many of these wineries — around 25 and counting — have become part of a new organization called Seattle Urban Wineries, designed to help promote and support these local businesses.
