Leavenworth, Wash., is a town typically associated with activities like skiing and rafting and for its Bavarian-themed downtown. But this also happens to be an excellent place to go if you’re the type of traveler who builds activities around food and beverage.
Among the spots to hit are:
Munchen Haus, where every brat is perfection and where the mustard selection is astounding.
Icicle Brewing Company, a.k.a. Leavenworth’s living room, where rafting guides rub elbows with the stitch-and-bitch club over beer and pretzels.
Boudreaux Cellars, whose tasting room stands out among the many in downtown Leavenworth for outstanding wines made in tiny batches and bottled by hand at the only Washington winery to exist entirely off the power grid.
South, a noticeable departure from the German food scene, where Latin food is served alongside impeccable cocktails.
Silvara Vineyards, technically outside of Leavenworth but only a short drive away. Great wine goes down even easier on the wide lawn overlooking vineyards and orchards.
Bavarian Bakery, where you can carb-load on fresh strudels, Danishes, pretzels and more.
Sulla Vita, another departure from German food, where wood-fired pizza, small plates and a great locally-focused wine list are the highlights.
