See the Northern Lights while sailing the Arctic Sea. Poseidon Expeditions makes it possible with sailings in 2019.

The annual round-trip cruises from Iceland to East Greenland take place in September, prime Northern Lights season. Over 11 days, guests live aboard the 54-suite Sea Spirit and enjoy a full expedition experience.

The September sailing is a great opportunity, as travel to the region in the summer can often mean the colorful displays are dimmed by a too-bright sky, and travel to the region in the winter can mean frightfully frigid temperatures. In September, travelers enjoy the best of each season.

However, not all the sights worth seeing are in the sky. The cruise also introduces travelers to Sccoresby Sund in Greenland, the largest and longest fjord system in the world. These deep fjords and narrow channels feature ice-clad high peaks, tidewater glaciers, colossal icebergs and multicolored tundra inhabited by musk oxen and Arctic hare.

The cruise stops at the Inuit village of Ittoqqortoormiit, the only permanent settlement in the region. The area boasts ancient archaeological sites, a museum, historical trappers’ huts and more.

While on board the ship, seabird and whale viewing is possible from the open decks. For an extra fee, travelers can also kayak along the rugged coastlines. Worried the magical scenery won’t look quite the same on your Instagram? An expert photographer is on staff to assist guests with getting the perfect shots.

The ship itself just completed a $1 million refurbishment. Beyond the suites, social spaces include two lounges, a library and restaurant
