Seoul is now home to the world’s fifth-tallest skyscraper, and with it come some other impressive stats. The building holds the world’s fastest elevator, highest swimming pool and highest observation deck.
The 1,819-foot Lotte World Tower comprises 123 floors and houses a 7-star hotel. The design is said to mimic traditional South Korean ceramics and calligraphy as the glass tower tapers toward the top. The tower, which sits on the banks of the Han river, also houses office and residential space, a 2,000-seat concert hall, an aquarium, movie theater and food court. The feat cost £2.8 billion to build.
The elevator ride is a thrilling one-minute jolt to the top of the tower. A tunnel carries visitors to the world’s highest glass-bottomed observation deck on the 118th floor, which floats 1,640 feet above a busy intersection.
The building aims toward eco-friendliness, with the inclusion of solar panels, wind turbines and water-harvesting systems. The building was seven years in the making, and the opening was marked by a 30,000-firework display.
