Not all who wander are lost … and sometimes a little bit of wandering is exactly what we need to find ourselves. Forcing ourselves into new situations can help us grow and learn.

Experiencing new things in new places helps us expand our horizons, but travel can also be a time for self-reflection. It forces us to examine our ideas and priorities. Not only do these adventures make for excellent travel stories, but they give you the chance to follow your whims. Sushi for breakfast? Sleeping in until 2 p.m.? Walking from one end of the city to the other? Not a problem.

Solo travel isn’t necessarily an anti-social activity. It can provide a much-needed break from routine and monotony. Traveling alone gives you the ultimate freedom to do what you want, where you want, when you want.

The scary part of solo travel usually is not the freedom but the safety concerns. When you’re on your own, there’s no one to watch your bag or have your back if you’ve had one too many drinks. There’s no need to be paranoid, but it’s a good idea to be extra vigilant and responsible.

It’s perfectly okay to get friendly with new people, but know where to draw the line. When in doubt, don’t risk it. There will be plenty of opportunities to make up for whatever you think you missed. Create your own memories and enjoy the journey.
