Sweden is opening a new museum in Stockholm early this year that will attempt to change the common perception of the Vikings.
The museum will aim to show the Vikings were not violent warriors, as is the common stereotype. Dick Harrison, a Swedish historian, claims the Vikings are “the most falsified characters in our country.”
Harrison is one of the experts involved in developing the new museum for the sea-faring culture. The museum will open on Stockholm’s Djurgården Island, positioned near some of the city’s top attractions like the Nordic Museum, the Vasa Museum and the outdoor Skansen museum. The new exhibition will be called Vikingaliv — Life of Vikings — and it will open in April.
The museum will cover 2,000 square meters. Its exhibits, still in the works, will hopefully break stereotypes while working to “provide a colourful and exciting historic tale about our ancient norsemen,” Harrison is quoted in Sweden’s The Local newspaper.
