To avoid becoming a victim of seasonal affective disorder, Swedes duck into well-lit sanctuaries for pick-me-ups in the form of a Swedish fika (a tradition of afternoon coffee accompanied by something sweet). In Stockholm’s Old Town — also known as Gamla Stan — cozy candlelit cafes fill up during the afternoon hours and provide a respite from the clouds and the cold.
