The culinary scene of Guatemala City is increasingly diverse, and Tamarindos has become a local favorite since it opened in 2000. Its owners have stylishly converted a former residence into a chic, open-plan venue which still offers inviting nooks for a more intimate experience.

As the name would suggest, tamarind features heavily in the menu, which offers a variety of fusion dishes which draw on Asian and Italian influences. The tuna tataki was delicious, fresh and tangy and enhanced by strong undertones of sesame oil.

The avocado nem were crispy and light, with none of the excess oil which you sometimes find in restaurants of lesser quality. The crab wonton lived up to the high standards set by the previous dishes, and an extensive wine list offered something for all tastes and budgets.

Service was efficient and attentive, yet discreet enough not to take away from the feeling of intimacy provided by the soft lighting and inviting corners. The restaurant offers a serene retreat from the bustle of Zone 10 outside.

Although the final bill of $120 for two people, with wine, is quite expensive by local standards, it was worth every cent. Visitors from the United States or Europe may be surprised to find that such high-quality food and service can be found for the same price as a middle of the road restaurant at home.

Overall, Tamarindos comes highly recommended for romantic dinners as well as business meetings.
