Just because Earth Day has passed doesn’t mean we can’t highlight destinations taking the extra steps to be sustainable. Amidst growing numbers of tourists, The Bahamas has prioritized protecting its environment through a series of sustainability initiatives year-round.

The Bahamas protects more than one million acres of marine habitat through a $500 million Sustainable Investment Program, in effect since 2023 and focused on coastal conservation, clean energy and blue carbon initiatives.

Multiple projects have been put in place to protect marine life, including coral farming and marine conservation initiatives. For example, Coral Vita works to restore the reefs using land-based techniques to grow coral in months instead of decades. This helps boost resilience against the warm oceans threatening its survival. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust created dedicated conservation zones to protect critical fish habitats of native bonefish, which in turn has created five new national parks and expanded an already existing one.

Mangrove Mania is an ongoing mangrove restoration project critical for shoreline protection and biodiversity. Locals and visitors alike are welcome to join in on the planting efforts.

Through The Bahamas’ People-to-People Program, travelers are connected with locals while exploring the many islands. About 30 percent of local hosts teach travelers eco-friendly practices they live by, including sourcing local food and environmental education. This program also helps boost the local communities of the islands.
