Scotland’s capital city is known for its rolling green hills, towering castle that looks over the city and the world’s best treasure trove of Scotch whisky. But a few blocks away from Edinburgh’s touristy Royal Mile where Scotch tastings seem to happen at every other shop, an old bank-turned-bar is a much more authentic place to sample some Scottish water.
Enter The Standing Order through its massive columns that dominate George Street, and turn left to enter the grand room where a bar sits along the far side, high-top tables spread out from there and dining tables stretch farther out. The space is massive, with high ceilings and large windows to let in the occasionally appearing Scotland sun.
When you first enter, figure out where you’re going to sit and make a note of the table number. When you’re ready to order, make your way through the marble columns to access the bar where you can place your order for both food and drink and give your table number to the bartender.
The bar keeps a hearty supply of varying Scotch whiskys such as Johnnie Walker, Ballantine and Bells. Find pub favorites on the food menu from a traditional English breakfast to fish and chips, and even a veggie burger with fries.
