As cycling becomes an ever more popular form of transport, enterprising bike lovers are taking their sport to stranger places than ever before.
The Urban Assault bike race took place Sept. 13 in an abandoned mill complex in Pawtucket, R.I. A group of enthusiasts built a challenging course involving jumps, ramps and obstacles built from old mill materials left over from the days when coats were made at the facility.
Competitors ducked and dived their way over loading-dock drops and jumps, serenaded by a bagpiper whose eerie music emanated from inside the mill itself. Riders of all ages were welcome, and although mountain bikes were recommended, competitors rode on steeds of all shapes and sizes.
Prizes were handed out for various categories but many were simply there to have fun. Not only did the event provide an opportunity for riders to experience a unique setting in which to practice their passion, it brought a sometimes disparate community of cycling enthusiasts together.
By putting on an event in a unique space, the organizers of Urban Assault also helped to raise awareness of the fun side of cycling at a time when bikes are becoming more popular for the daily commute. The Urban Assault team will be putting on a similar event next year so bike lovers should keep the date free in their diaries.
