Three Summer Swimming Holes Worth Traveling for

by Angelique Platas

Aug 4, 2019

If you can’t make your way to Greece this summer, travel to Havasu Falls, Arizona. The hidden swimming hole is only reachable via a 10-mile mule ride or a helicopter trip, but well worth the effort. © Jonmanjeot – Dreamstime.com

Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

Few activities say American summer like a good old-fashioned swimming hole. Find a natural splash-around spot near you, or one worth traveling for with this list.

Opal Pool, Oregon

Hike the stunning Cedar Flats of Oregon, working up a sweat for a dip in the Opal Pool. This lake offers an otherworldly swim, surrounded by mossy rock formations and a cool, protected reserve tucked away from the sun.

Hamilton Pool, Texas

Located in Travis County Parks in Dripping Springs, Texas, this watering hole is more like a picturesque lagoon. The natural pool rests partially under cover, like a grotto, in a canyon with a nearby waterfall — all a well-earned swim after a hike from the park’s entrance.

Havasu Falls, Arizona

Camp, hike, swim and sightsee at Havasu Canyon in Arizona. The falls spill out like a tropical oasis in the middle of a desert, with bright-blue water and a pristine swimming hole below. The clear-blue water rushes over into smaller sections, like hot tubs surrounding the main infinity pool. Bring your suit and water shoes and make the most of the surrounding falls and natural watering holes, including Navajo Falls, Fifty Foot Falls, Mooney Falls and Beaver Falls — all located on the Havasupai Indian reservation canyon, within the Grand Canyon.
