Whether you’re spending a semester abroad or just enjoying a long stretch outside of the United States, chances are you’d like to date while you’re overseas. The dating culture varies across different countries and approaching it with an American attitude can lead to a lot of awkward first and only dates.
Learn Local Romance
Different cultures have different ideas of romance, so it’s important to check up on local customs when it comes to courtship. In some areas, it’s totally cool to hop into bed on the first date, whereas in others it could potentially send you to jail.
Use Protection
Playing it safe applies no matter where you go. Unfortunately, there isn’t a place on earth where STIs don’t exist. Use condoms and other forms of protection every time you decide to get intimate with a foreigner.
Prepare to Meet the Family
Americans aren’t quite as close with their families as most foreigners. Whereas you might go months before meeting a significant other’s parents over here, it’ll be more like days when you’re overseas. Better put your best foot forward!
Don’t Fetishize Them
Foreigners don’t want to be your experiment. It’s easy to fall into the trap of looking at a potential date as an exotic unicorn, but the more you emphasize your differences and act like an overzealous fan the more distance you’ll create between you.
Learn The Language
Effective communication is key to dating, whether it’s the first day or decades into a relationship, and you’ll communicate far more effectively if you speak his native tongue. Put forth the effort to become fluent; you’re in his country, not yours.
