Tips For Getting a Tattoo in Bangkok, Thailand

Destination

Sometimes a trip is so spectacular and life changing, you can’t help but want to immortalize it right then and there in the form of a tattoo. There aren’t a whole lot of countries where this could truly be recommended, but if you make your way to Bangkok you might want to give it a go. In fact, some people travel there specifically to get inked thanks to the quality of the artists. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Choose Your Artist Wisely

Absolutely do not get tattooed by someone who doesn’t speak the same language, whether that language is English or Thai. So many people ended up with jacked tattoos here in the States due to miscommunication, you definitely don’t want to take the risk overseas.

Check the Cleanliness

Diseases nearly wiped out are more prevalent in Thailand, so watch your artist like a hawk to make sure he’s using new, sterile equipment before he gets anywhere near your skin.

Research Beforehand

Don’t just walk into any shop in Bangkok and ask for a tattoo. Get online beforehand, search Yelp reviews and ask people who’ve already been. Find a great, high-quality artist who can give you exactly what you’re asking for.

Adjust For the Weather

Tattoos take a long time to heal and the climate can actually have an effect on how long it takes. Bangkok is a hot, tropical area and failing to take proper care of your new tat can lead to scabs, fading or an infection.

Don’t Skimp on Price

Thailand as a whole is cheaper than the United States, but if your artist is charging what seems like a steal it means he’s probably bad at his craft. Check the average prices before you go and make sure your artist is confident enough to charge a fair price. Cheap doesn’t often mean good.

Your options are typically plugging your laptop in next to a tiny in-room table, if you’re lucky, or you’re stuck answering emails from your hotel bed — hardly conducive to productivity.
