Now more than ever the travel industry is working on ways to make travel more sustainable. From eliminating plastic straws in airplane cabins to partnering with conservancy organizations, there are many ways big and small to be more environmentally friendly. Follow our suggestions of ways you can take sustainable travel into your own hands on your next trip.
Do Your Research
Before you plan a trip, do some research using the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and The International Ecotourism Society. These organizations are great resources for recommendations on the best tour operators, hotels and airlines. Educate yourself on sustainable travel standards before you travel.
Consider Your Carbon Footprint
Carefully choose your method of transportation for your trip. Consider train travel, or carpooling with your travel companions. If you must fly, opt for a non-stop flight, as planes emit the most carbon emissions during take-offs and landings. Support your hotel’s sustainability practices like reusing towels.
Chose Souvenirs Wisely
Purchasing souvenirs from local artisans may not always be the least expensive option, but doing so helps the local economy. However, avoid purchasing wildlife products like shells and furs. Some of these items can come from rare or endangered species.
