Safety

Getting outdoors and communing with nature is a favorite pastime for many; however, just as many people are new to navigating the wilderness, and first-time hikers should heed a number of basic tips before leaving the house and hitting the trails.

Know Where You’re Going

Whether visiting a local park or trekking the country, conditions are dicey if you don’t know where you are, or where you’re headed. Apps and smartphones make it easier these days to find your way, but always be prepared just in case. Not all off-the-beaten-path hiking trails are privy to strong signals. Can you hear me now?

Try Avenza (or other similar apps)

Many local parks and the Forest Service distribute free and paid maps to Avenza, available on iOS and Android devices. Hikers can download maps prior to leaving the house, allowing them to consistently track their route.

Start Early

Whether its rough terrain or an impending storm, it’s hard to predict what could impede your hike. Start early to avoid pitfalls and stay on route by the light of day. Consider shortening your route if you get a later start than originally planned.

Dress (and Pack) Appropriately

Check the weather report, and pay attention to the potential conditions. Consider moisture-wicking clothes to eliminate sweat or to dry quickly if conditions are wet. Break in your boots and equipment prior to hitting the trail. Bring along appropriate supplies, like first-aid items. Pack a snack.

Take Your Time

It’s all about pacing yourself; enjoy the time outdoors and don’t over-exert yourself to prevent fatigue and injury. Stretch before heading out.
