Top 5 / Europe

Denmark is a mixture of old world charm and sleek modernity. In the capital city of Copenhagen new designs complement and mimic nature and offer a stark contrast to the traditional designs of centuries-old cathedrals and dwellings.

Danish architecture is known as some of the most progressive in the world and these five locations give visitors an amazing array of sites to explore.

Grundtvig Church
This Gothic cathedral was designed in the Expressionist architectural style and has been in operation since 1927. With its towering facade and cavernous interior, the church is a must-see.

Amalienborg Palace
Another example of old-world style, the palace is home to the Danish royal family. The property consists of four identical building facades that frame an octagonal courtyard. The centerpiece is a statue of King Frederick V on horseback.

Copenhagen Opera House
Not only is the Opera House an incredible location to see a world-class performance, but the building itself is something to behold. With a price tag of more than $500 million, this ultra-modern structure is located directly on the waterfront on the island of Holmen and is best viewed when lit up at night.

The Black Diamond Royal Danish Library
Another modern feature of the Danish skyline, the Black Diamond is not only one of the largest libraries in the world but one of the most visually stunning. It is known for its odd angles and polished black granite exterior.

VM-Bjerget
The name of this building, designed by the Bjarke Ingles Group, means “mountain dwelling” in Danish. Located in the Ørestad neighborhood of the city, it is intended to resemble a series of homes dotting a mountainside. The starkly contrasting glass and wood design features create an impressive effect.
