You could spend weeks in Tokyo and still have something new to see, but here are some of the best attractions for first-time visitors to the city.

Senso-ji is the most popular temple in Tokyo, visited by an incredible number of people per year. As a result it’s busy, but you won’t want to miss it. Another historical site worth the trip is Meiji-jingu, a huge shrine.

When it comes to museums there are lots to choose from, but if you can only visit one make it the Tokyo National Museum. It houses the largest collection of Japanese art in the world.

Japanese gardens are famous around the world, and Rikugi-en is thought to be the best garden in Tokyo. After the tranquility of the garden, why not dip into the crazy Golden Gai neighborhood in Shinjuku, home to loads of tiny bars where you can rub shoulders with the locals.

It might seem strange to make a junction a port of call on your Tokyo tour, but Shibuya Crossing is thought to be the busiest intersection in the world. You won’t want to stay long, but it’s certainly worth seeing.

Get to the heart of the working city with a visit to Tsukiji Market, where you can see rows upon rows of vendors selling every imaginable product.
