Move over experiential travel: 2017 has its own trend and it’s uniquely transformative. While 2016 saw a large movement visiting far-flung destinations to experience new cultures and authentic experiences, 2017 will see travel that is more self-focused.
Transformative Travel is defined as travel that focuses on attaining perspective, self reflection and development, and a deeper communion between the individual, nature and culture.
The movement is off to a good start. The newly formed Transformative Travel Collaborative organization is providing travelers with tools to encourage personal growth while on the road, in hopes of giving people a break from their technology- and device-driven lifestyles. The trend promotes disconnecting and focusing inward through inspirational travel.
The concept is based on the belief that when people experience entirely new things, it alters personal perceptions not only of other people, cultures and places, but also of themselves. The new trend goes one step beyond 2016’s experiential and authentic travel trend and, so far, it seems like its heart is in the right place, wherever in the world that may be.
