If you want to mimic the routes of 19th-century settlers, take the California Zephyr, traveling 2,438 miles through seven states over 51 hours. Departing from Chicago, you’ll follow the settlers west along the Continental Divide and into the canyons of the Colorado River. From there, you travel into the Rockies and through the Utah and Nevada deserts, passing the Sierra Nevada Mountains and into California. This journey offers the most expansive landscapes North America has to offer and will really give you a sense of the adventure felt by those early settlers as they moved west to conquer new lands.
