With sleep tourism growing in popularity, destinations and hotels all over the world offer retreats, treatments and promotions designed to help you get a better night’s sleep.
An award-winning destination spa and wellness retreat, Ananda in the Himalayas offers a holistic program for sleep enhancement. The Sleep Enhancement Program offers lifestyle modifications; dietary corrections; Ayurveda including Panchakarma and Shamana therapies; yoga and emotional healing; and Traditional Chinese Medicine including acupuncture, cupping and moxibustion. The program helps improve sleep quality, energy, attention span, memory difficulties, cognitive dysfunction and fatigue. The program is available for seven nights and includes pre-arrival assessment of sleep issues and lifestyle, consultants with a team of experts, customized wellness plans, and more.
Studies show a direct link between regular exercise and sleep quality. Even just moderate physical activity during the day can help people sleep better at night. Walking, running, hiking, biking, swimming and yoga are all great ways to get that exercise in. Destinations with a lot of walkable attractions and hiking/biking trails can help improve sleep. For example, the beach town Las Catalinas in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, is a car-free town, meaning travelers have to explore local attractions on foot. Las Catalinas features more than 26 miles of trails with stunning views of the coastline, valleys and unique wildlife. All trails vary in difficulty and length, so make sure to find one that fits your strengths.
Along with walkable attractions, the destination also offers different options to help improve sleep. Bath therapy and cold plunges have been known to help with better sleep. At Center of Joy, a wellness hub, travelers can take a cold plunge for better sleep. Cold therapy, also known as asold water therapy or cold exposure, involves submerging most of your body in extremely cold water and is believed to have various effects on physical and mental health. After a couple minutes in the water, the parasympathetic nervous system takes over and creates a more centered and meditative experience. It has also been found to improve sleep quality with individuals experiencing deeper sleep and feeling more refreshed in the morning.
Studies found eating a better diet, particularly being a vegan or vegetarian, can improve sleep and help alleviate insomnia. Calabash Cove Resort and Spa is one of the only properties in Saint Lucia to offer a vegan menu. The resort features an extensive menu featuring vegan and vegetarian dishes based on the seasons. With the ability to accommodate most dietary restrictions, the culinary team constantly upgrades its vegan and vegetarian offerings to ensure a delicious and healthy meal for all. Pair the healthier dining options with the resort’s seclusion, beauty and amenities, and guests are bound to get a good night’s rest while on vacation.
